A visit to Udaipur is no less than a sensory treat! With an abundance of royal palaces, picturesque lakes and bustling street markets, this is one city in India that you need to completely immerse yourself in for an authentic experience.

We have written extensively about the food, the shopping, and also how to plan a trip to this gorgeous city. However, we still feel words fall short in bringing out the beauty and magic Udaipur has to offer. Hence, we thought of compiling our entire experience here and offering you visual stimulation to pack your bags! So, tag along and find out what are the top 7 things to do in Udaipur for an authentic experience of the city.

1City Palace Tour

The grand entrance to the palace

The most popular, iconic, historical structure in Udaipur is probably the City Palace. This sits on top of every tourist’s list of things to do in Udaipur! And, rightfully so! No matter how touristy and mainstream it may seem, the City Palace definitely deserves one visit. A walk through this ancient structure constructed over a span of 400 years, is laced with history. Located on the banks of the beautiful Lake Pichola, the City Palace takes you back in the times of the Rajputs and Mughals.

What you see below are just a few snippets of the magnificent structure to tease your imagination! The palace complex is massive so take out a good 3-4 hours for a complete tour of the palace and experience royalty in all its glory.

2Jagmandir Palace Boat Ride

The stunning Lake Pichola on which the palace resides

Yes, yes, there’s another palace on this list! A trip to Udaipur calls for visits to as many palaces you can fit into your itinerary! However, in this case, it is not just the palace that puts this on our list of things to do in Udaipur, but it is the boat ride you take to get to the palace that is the highlight here.

The Jagmandir Palace is located in the middle of the beautiful Lake Pichola and one of the best way to enjoy the scenic beauty is to hop on a boat on the banks of the lake and ride to the other side. It is relaxing, calming and every bit worth the money you pay ( about INR 800 for a return trip per person).

3Jagdish Temple

Stairway to heaven maybe?

This is probably one of the most talked-about and popular temples in the city and features in every list of things to do in Udaipur. With beautifully carved interiors and exteriors, this is a good place to catch some locals praying to their Almighty in their own unique way.

4Shop at Hathipole Market

Is any trip complete without a whirlwind of a shopping spree?! I think not! If you are in Udaipur, do head to the Hathipole market where the locals shop for clothes, fabrics and jewellery. You will also find tiny shops stuffed with local handicrafts. Even if you have no plans to buy anything, I would still suggest you go check this place out just to get a feel of the local fare. If you’re like me and love bringing back souvenirs from your travels, I have one full-length article dedicated to shopping in Udaipur that you can check out for more information.

5Eat at local restaurants

We love eating like locals when travelling anywhere! And Udaipur was a gold mine of insanely delicious local food. There’s a lot on offer for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians so go ahead, look at the photos and drool! We have also compiled a list of best places to eat in Udaipur if you want to continue the drool fest 😉

6Bagore Ki Haveli

Main entrance to the palace and the museum

Ok, so this is the final palace on our list. Promise! But this one is not to be missed at all for the cultural show it runs every evening to increase awareness of the local culture among tourists. It is such a delight to watch the beautiful local dance forms and the puppet show, that you will wish it continued longer. The show, the stage or the set up may not be fancy, but that just gives you a peek into the simplicity of the people. We thought it’s a great initiative by the government because, after all, the whole point of travel is to be able to broaden your horizon and how you see the world around you.

Super fun puppet show every evening!

7Fateh Sagar Lake

This is another famous lake in a city that’s known for its numerous lakes! Take a romantic stroll along the banks of the Fateh Sagar lake while watching the sun set behind the mighty Aravalli hills, as you reminisce the time spent in this beautiful historic city.
